When considering gold coins for a portfolio, the actual value of the coin needs to be taken into consideration.  There are many different types of coins on the market to pick from.  The base value of the coin will always be there due to the bullion price.  But what if the design is rare?  That will drive up the value of the coin.  Coins that are pre-1933 are considered to have historical value.  Other factors will come into play.  Condition of the coin is a large factor in the value of the coin.  One that is considerably worn will fetch much less than one in mint condition.
