Water main flushing continues
Posted: May 09, 2008 13:30:27 PST

The Public Works Department will continue its annual city-wide water main flushing program on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., from Monday, May 12, through Friday, May 30, 2008.

Water main flushing dislodges and removes mineral deposits that naturally build up on the inside wall of water pipes. If they are not routinely flushed, the build up can reduce the capacity and efficiency of the water distribution system.

Flushing areas are difficult to define because they are based on pressure zones and pump stations. A map of the numbered flushing districts is available on the city's website at www.cob.org . If you live in any of the following areas, check the map to determine whether you may be affected by the water main flushing.

#8 Alabama Hill area

#9 Silver Beach area

#10 Columbia area

#11 Whatcom Falls area

Flushing the water lines can cause discoloration from minerals and sediments that are being flushed out. If you live in any of the areas listed above, be alert for any change in the color of your water between May 12 and May 30. If your water looks brown or rusty colored do not run the hot water. Wait a few minutes, and run the cold water for a short time. If the water does not clear, wait a few more minutes and try again; continue until the water clears. Avoid washing white clothes when your water is discolored as it may cause staining.

The water used during the flushing operation is de-chlorinated before it is discharged into the city storm drainage system. For questions or concerns regarding the flushing program, please contact Marty Gray with the Public Works Department Water Standards Group at 778-7700 or mgray@cob.org .
