Word on the street this morning is that McCain has selected Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

If this is accurate, then this is a brilliant pick, and one I am highly enthusiastic about.

More to follow if this plays out to be an accurate tidbit of information.

=========================================================================

EDIT: Okay, I just got out of a meeting, and the buzz I heard at 4am has turned out to be true. I love this pick, and because of it, my lukewarm support for the McCain ticket has heated up. No longer is it an "I can't take nObama," and has become an "I like this ticket!"

Sarah Palin, a fiscal and social conservative, Republican Governor of Alaska, has approval ratings in the high 80s to low 90s. Running on a "clean government" platform in the 1990s, she soundly defeated a corrupt Republican incumbent governor, despite not having the support of party insiders, as well as being significantly outspent by her Democratic opponent. With the win, Palin became the youngest governor in Alaska's history, taking office at age 42, and the first woman to be governor of the State of Alaska. Fred Barnes, Executive Editor of The Weekly Standard, described her as "a politician of eye-popping integrity."

Following her clean government platform, Palin began undoing earmarks and pork-barrel spending, the most notable of which was killing the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere" brought to us by the lovely, yet corrupt, Republican Senator Ted Stevens.

She was appointed Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission but resigned the position when legislators ignored her complaints of legal and ethical violations, and conflicts of interest, exposing many such violations following her resignation.

Palin was two-term Wasilla Alaska mayor and a city councilwoman, prior to being elected Governor. As Mayor of Wasilla, she kept her campaign promises to reduce her own salary, and lowered property taxes 60%. Because of her excellence in this position, she was elected President of the Alaska Council of Mayors.

Palin is a "rough and tumble" woman, as a competition snowmobiler, moose hunter, lifetime member of the NRA, ice-fisher, private pilot, has worked in commercial fishing, and yet she maintains her feminine side, being the first runner up to the Miss Alaska pageant in 1984.

Palin is ardently pro-life. She is opposed to same-sex marriage, yet used her first gubernatorial veto to block legislation which would have barred the State of Alaska from granting benefits to gay state employees and their partners.

Palin married (and is still married to) her high school sweetheart, and is now the mother of five (soccer mom). The oldest (18) just enlisted in the military and will be deployed to Iraq next month. The youngest, a son, born in April of this year, has Downs Syndrome. Despite the results of prenatal genetic testing, abortion was never an option, and in Palin's mind, her son is perfect. "I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection."

I agree with PPP on all but one point....she'll be President in 4 years! McCain's only got 4 in him...but I think that's a good thing. :)

Her only drawback is one I also have with McCain...Pro Life. Don't get me wrong, I'm not Pro-Abortion, I'm Pro-CHOICE.

Like lots of people, never heard of her until yesterday morning, but did some fast research and am impressed with her track record. I do not personally agree with all of her positions, for instance, I am pro-choice, but I do admire and respect her willingness to state her opinions and views and to take hardline, high road, stances when necessary. Her work in Alaska is impressive and she sounds like one tough cookie willing to do real work, not just gab dreams & platitudes with no foundation or substance, like "O-some-a do".

As far as her experience level, she has as much as the other side's presidential candidate (if not more), so for those that try to attack that front, they are barking up the wrong tree. Hope lots of people across the country wake up, study the issues, and vote for McCain & Palin. Palin sounds like one "tough cookie" that can hold her own and can contribute positively to the ticket and for the long term, the White House administration.

Really? Runner up for Miss Alaska 24 years ago and mayor of a town of 9,000 and 20 months as Governor of Alaska is equal to Obama's Senate time, his State Senate time, etc., etc. So she's prepared to qualified to take McCain's place if needed? What experience has she that qualifies her for "national office" let alone the "possible presidency"? I have to admit that I like the walk, she's obviously not just a "talker". What about the story about her firing the State Police Chief. Here's the article.

Palin is under investigation to determine whether she pressured and then fired the state police chief in July because he refused to dismiss her former brother-in-law. At the time, the governor's younger sister was involved in a bitter divorce and child custody dispute with the man, a state trooper. A bipartisan committee of the state Legislature voted unanimously to hire a retired prosecutor to investigate. His report is due Oct. 31, just days before the Nov. 4 election.

The firing of state Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan has unearthed a stream of private details about the governor, her husband and her family. The state probe is also focusing on a half-dozen top state officials accused of trying to drive trooper Mike Wooten from the force.

Critics say the episode - dubbed Troopergate in Alaska - cuts against Palin's reputation as an ethics crusader who holds even her own party accountable.

I don't have any personal opinion but it should be on your list of her "prominent features and experience". I've noticed that often those who wave the "ethics flag the hardest" are often bitten by the poison fruit. She certainly will liven up a candidacy that needed it. McCain used to be very outspoken but not any more. His people are scared to death he'll speak his mind as he's been well known to do in the past.

One more quick comment. Having read Ms. Palin's strengths and what she brings to the table take a look over at Hamster Talk and read what John Watt's take is on her selection as the R's V. P. candidate.
