The Mount Baker School District is scheduled to send a $4.1 million maintenance and operations levy to the voters, covering the years 2009-2012, and including an increase of $916,672 in the first year, according to the Lynden Tribune. District Superintendent Richard Gantman stated that the levy provides for about 18% of the district’s operating budget and “funds much of our program that makes Mount Baker unique.” That's not terribly descriptive, and I'm not challenging the need for the levy, but I think that little quote could use further explanation.

Mt.Baker, Fernadale and several other school districts are gearing up for levies.
They usually have very short descriptions with the presumption that you are cold hearted if you vote no "to the childrens"
Since the levies are almost always held at an odd time, and they need a minimum number of voters to make the levy pass, I let my very good friends who are administrators, teachers, and coaches know that they need my NO vote just so they have enough of a percentage of voters to participate to make the Yes votes valid...Nyehehehee...

Ballots are on their way, now that the Primary is behind us. And this will be the first election conducted with the new rules which allow school districts to pass levies with a simple majority, meaning 50% plus one, rather than a super majority. Bonds, however, still need a super majority to pass. A super majority is defined as 40% of voters in a district voting, and 60% of those voters approving.

As PPP mentioned, it is more than just Mt. Baker putting a levy on the ballot. That one just caught my eye as I was reading the Lynden paper. There are seven school districts in Whatcom County, and each of them will have at least one item on the March 11 ballot.

Even though the requirements have been relaxed to 50% +1
There is still a minimum participation requirement to make the vote valid.
Therefore they still need my NO vote to pass their Levy...Nyehehehee...
